Understanding Your Insurance

Your insurance policy is an agreement between you and your insurance company. Insurance companies often offer a range of different plans, and so coverage for one member of an insurance network can vary from that of a different member of the same insurance company’s network. Center Counseling cannot advise you on what your insurance policy may or may not cover or how much you may need to pay toward your deductible, copay, coinsurance, etc. Please contact your insurance payer to discuss your benefits with them directly.

Here is some information about Center Counseling that may be helpful as you talk with your insurer about your coverage for counseling services:

Health Insurance Deductible

Your deductible is the amount you pay for covered health care services before your insurance plan starts to pay. For example, if your plan has a $6,000 deductible, you pay the first $6,000 of covered services yourself. Your deductible typically resets each policy plan year, and so even if you met your deductible in the past, you will need to know when your new policy plan year begins so that you are prepared to once again pay for your health care services until you meet your new deductible.

Family plans often have both an individual deductible (which applies to each person) and a family deductible (which applies to all family members). Also note that some plans have separate deductibles for certain services, like prescription drugs.

Health Insurance Copayment (“Copay”) or Coinsurance

Your copayment or copay is a fixed amount that you pay for each covered health care visit, after you have met your deductible. Some insurance companies may list your copay(s) on your insurance card. It’s possible that your plan may involve different copays for different types of health services, and/or different places of service (e.g. an office visit versus a telehealth visit).

Coinsurance is a percentage that you pay for a covered health care service, after you have met your deductible.

Some insurance plans involve copays and some involve coinsurance; some plans may involve both.
